The annual educational tourcentred in Anuradhapura, organised by the Postgraduate Institute of Pali and Buddhist Studies at the University of Kelaniya, took place from October 26 to 28, 2026. The tour was guided by the Director, Senior Professor Wasantha Priyadarshana. The academic staff who participated included Ven. Prof. Miriswatthe Wimalagnana Thero (Head, Department of Buddhist Culture), Dr. Rathnasiri Rathnayaka (Head, Department of Buddhist Thought), Dr. Asoka Walithota, Librarian Dr. Geethani Attanayake, Ven. Dr. Thalgampala Paduma Thero, Ven. Dr. Vilegoda Sirivimala Thero, and Ven. Dr. Sopaka Thero (from Myanmar). Mr. Dassana Thilakaratne, the Deputy Registrar, participated as a representative of the non-academic staff. Over one hundred student monks and nuns—pursuing Master’s, M.Phil., and Ph.D. degrees—from countries including Myanmar, China, Vietnam, Mongolia, Hong Kong, and Bangladesh etc. participated in this study tour.
The academic focus of the tour centred on Sri Lanka’s Buddhist arts, history, and culture. By visiting sites such as Dambulla, Ritigala, Mihintale, Jetavanarama, Abhayagiri, Thuparama, Ruwanwelisaya, the Sri Maha Bodhi, the Samadhi Buddha statue, and the Kuttam Pokuna (Twin Ponds), the international students gained a practical understanding of Sri Lankan Buddhist culture.
The contribution was made by Professor Ven. Miriswatthe Wimalagnana Thero's imparting knowledge about Sri Lankan Buddhist culture to the students earned him great respect from the academic and non-academic staff, as well as from the students themselves. The lectures delivered by Professor Miriswatte Wimalagnana Thero during the study tour demonstrated not only his profound knowledge of Buddhist culture but also his unparalleled aptitude for guiding postgraduate studies in this field. The extent of his vast knowledge became evident through the academic discussions that followed the study tour undertaken by the monks from abroad.
